Well, everything is in the title⦠Is there any reason for not passing the contents of the rectangular selection when invoking a UNIX Text Filter? Instead, the whole document is passed. It seems quite easy to do and would be handy for some exotic applications.
For example, I'm trying to code a 'Smart Sum' Perl filter that would extract and sum all the numbers found in a rectangular selection. As a use case, think of a copy-paste from the 'top' command in which you would like to sum an arbitrary column. Right now, I need to copy-paste the region into a blank document before proceeding. Note that this filter is not for formatting text but rather for interactive use, for example in a shell worksheet. BTW, I've been a registered user since 2001 but this is my very first message!
