This question was being asked in the context of being asked to decide
if you want to save or discard changes when you attempt to quit with
open files that had unsaved changes. Unless there is an ability to
abort the quit using the compare search is too late. I am not sure if
there is such an abort quit option. I am only pointing out that
unless there is such an abort choice, the ability to compare the
status of an open file against its status on the disk is of no use.
