The behaviors you describe below are indeed both expected & normal:

Individual file references just move wherever you place them within the file list.

Since however folders' contents are automatically listed, if you drag a file from a folder to some other position in the list, you're just creating a new reference to that file at the target location.

Does this help? :-)

Thanks for bringing collections to my attention - I think these would be useful for keeping a list of documents that I need quick access to at the top level of each of my bbedit projects without actually having to move them around on the hard drive. I'm seeing some strange behavior though when I add or remove items to/from a collection from different levels of my project hierarchy.

E.g. project hierarchy looks like this:

collection
document0.md
folder1
document1.md
folder 2
document2.md
etc.

If I drag document0.md into the collection, it appears to be "moved" into the collection in that it now only appears in the collection and not in the top level of the project hierarchy. If I drag document1.md into the collection, it appears in both the collection and in it's original folder in the hierarchy.

The more disconcerting behavior comes when I select an item in a collection and hit the delete key. Items added from a lower level of the project hierarchy are simply deleted from the collection but remain in their original location. The item that was originally at the top level of the hierarchy is deleted from the hierarchy altogether.

Note that none of the above files are actually moved or deleted from the hard drive…

Is this considered normal behavior or am I'm missing something?

Thanks,

Craig
