Yes, I use that (and have it bound to a hotkey even), but when I do that the 
other document keeps the project view sidebar and then I have to open THAT 
document in a new window to get rid of it.

And then if I need to open  third document, I get to do it all over again. 
Hopefully the aforementioned preference setting takes care of this.
