I’m not sure if this is an improvement.

For example I get these “combining characters” when I paste text from a PDF into my (utf8) TeX file. In previous versions I could immediately see that the text contained one or more of these chars (they have been rendered as “?” in BBEdit) and could correct them accordingly.

With the new versions it is no longer possible to spot these chars visually and it happened several times that I only saw the wrong chars in the outuput PDF after typesetting the TeX file. (e.g. “u” instead of “ü”).
