Works over here (although I'm on BBEdit 11.1 beta, but I don't
remember any problems with 11.03...). I tried it just now on a
5.5 MB file to be sure the file size wasn't factor.
This seems to utilize the OS X spell checker. In BBEdit's
spelling panel, I have "Automatic By Language" showing in the
pop-up at the bottom. That pop-up has an "Open Text
Preferences..." option at bottom of its list which goes to the
OS X System Preferences -> Keyboard -> Text preferences, where I
see the same pop-up, among other things. I'm running OS X 10.10.3.
What setting(s) do you have in those pop-ups? Might be worth
poking around there.
I see that the Learn-ed words are put into my ~/Library/Spelling
folder in a file called "LocalDictionary" - which I opened with
BBEdit. I suppose if that file or the Spelling folder it's in
had mangled permissions, the system might not be saving the
Learn-ed words. Finder Permissions under Get Info shows that
mine allows both read and write permissions for me, wheel, and everyone.
All guesses above, but they might help.
