Yes. The Cmd-W command closes the active document, if there is one, or the front window if there is no active document. Selecting multiple documents in the sidebar clears the editing view, so Command-W will close the front window.

If you want to close specific selected documents, select them and then use the contextual menu (right-click on one of the selected documents) and choose "Close".

Speaking of the “Currently Open Documents” sidebar, is there a way to sort it alphabetically?

It is, ordinarily.
