Capsule summary: This misbehavior is due to a (longstanding) bug in
the Wacom tablet software, which we unfortunately haven't found any
way to work around.

(PS: I do recommend that anyone who's affected by this bug report it
to Wacom.)

To follow up on this: after further research, we were able to identify a specific misbehavior in the Wacom driver and have reported it to Wacom, with a favorable response.

The nature of the misbehavior suggested a workaround, which is in place for BBEdit 11.5.1.

Wacom intends to address this in a future release of the tablet driver.

Someday I'll look back on all this and laugh... until they sedate me.
