Six and a half years on, I am having the same issue. But I can solve it by
changing a setting:

Preferences => Editor Defaults => Soft wrap text to: Window width

I need to close and reopen the application for the setting to take effect,
and only then in new windows.

In old windows, I can get window-width wrapping from the menus:

View => Text Display => Soft Wrap Text: at Window Width

That seems to solve all the problems — note that you must have Default Text
Window (Window menu) set for the window width you want.
