Good { morning, afternoon, evening },

We're working on a major upgrade to BBEdit, and have decided to make a pre-release version available to the BBEdit-Talk discussion group.

*** Please note that 12.0 is not an automatic free upgrade. Your license code for BBEdit 11 or older will not work, but you should have no difficulty using BBEdit 12 in evaluation mode for the duration of the standard 30-day evaluation period.

*** If you purchased BBEdit 11 very recently, there is no cause for alarm - we will announce free-upgrade details and send license codes to eligible customers when the new version is released.

*** You can use BBEdit 11.6.7 and 12.0 side-by-side for the duration of the beta period, if you wish. (This is actually a good idea, since you can cross-check any problems against the old version while writing up a bug report.)

Note that this is a _pre-release_ version. The intent is to fix bugs and address areas of improvement based on what our customers have reported. However, since the software is at this point not fully tested, there _may_ be bugs and regressions.

If this prospect makes you nervous, then sticking with the public release versions is your best course of action. Nobody will be offended if you choose to do so; you're under no obligation to install and use anything but a public release. :-)

Following is a summary of changes since the most recent pre-release build. Complete change notes for all of the pre-release builds in this cycle are available here: <https://s3.amazonaws.com/BBSW-download/12.0_Notes.txt>.

The change notes are organized into additions, changes, and fixes, and are annotated where appropriate with case numbers. So if you recognize a number corresponding to a support case that was opened for you, you can now verify that it's been fixed correctly. Please take the time to review the changes before using the new build -- it'll be worth your time.

One final note: If you run into a bug in a pre-release version, PLEASE DO NOT REPORT THE BUG TO THE LIST. This includes asking about whether others have seen the same problem. Instead, please send a bug report to <[email protected]> and we will deal with it there. This will help us keep the list discussion on topic and productive for all list members.

============================================================================

version 12.0 (398035) (2017-08-22)

*** BBEdit now requires macOS 10.11.6 or later.

*** This build does not necessarily fix a bug that you reported.
Please review the notes, and if the case number *or* description
matches something that you reported, please check it and make
sure that it's working as expected.

If the change notes do not mention your specific issue and you
continue to encounter it, please do *not* write in and report it
again. I promise we'll get to it in due course.

Additions
---------

o (none in this build)

Changes
-------

* [DOC] If the disk file behind a document has been changed on
disk, and the document has unsaved changes, "Compare Against Disk
File" is now an option in the alert that appears (and the alert
    has been rearranged).

Fixes
-----

* [NFR] [342350] Files within folders in projects are (once again)
tracked by file reference, so that if a file gets renamed, it
will get re-selected as intended when its parent folder gets
    rescanned.

* [NFR] Attempting a column operation will now report a more
helpful error when the column delimiter type can't be guessed.

* [NFR] [342489, 342490] Fixed bugs reported with keyboard equivalents
    in menu items.

* [NFR] [342482] Added some missing keywords to the Completion
    preferences search terms.

* [NFR] Improved the presentation of various application-level
    error conditions.

* [NFR] [342546] Scroll bar tick marks for live-match results will
now use a higher contrast color when a dark color scheme is in
    use.

* [NFR] Floating palettes are now forced to use the standard Aqua
appearance, even when a dark color scheme is in use. This works
around drawing bugs in the OS and presents a consistent
appearance with the system palettes (colors, fonts, etc).

* [NFR] [342480, 342488] Fixed regression in which the "Reopen
Using Encoding" submenu wasn't visible on the File menu.

* [NFR] Fixed a bug in which the Shift key couldn't be used to set
a keyboard equivalent which included an arrow key.

* [NFR] Made a change to work around a performance bug on macOS
10.12 (29376943) which would dramatically slow the application
down while drawing the sidebar in projects, multi-document
    windows, and disk browsers.

* [NFR] [342623] Turned off antialiasing for the insertion point so
that it looks less fuzzy on @1x displays.

* [342503] Fixed bug in which the insertion point and subsequent
output in shell worksheets would not be scrolled into view when
the command line being executed was on the very last visible line
    of the document.

* [342213] Fixed bug in which application state (but not auto-save
data) was lost when quitting with running multi-file search or
text factory windows open. (The application will still require an
extra Quit command in this case, but you won't lose open window
    state or positions.)

* [342174] Fixed bug in which CSS margin and padding values were
placed into the wrong dialog field in some situations, leading to
    inappropriate changes to the CSS.
