Good { morning, afternoon, evening },

We're working on a major upgrade to BBEdit, and have decided to make a pre-release version available to the BBEdit-Talk discussion group.

*** Please note that 12.0 is not an automatic free upgrade. Your license code for BBEdit 11 or older will not work, but you should have no difficulty using BBEdit 12 in evaluation mode for the duration of the standard 30-day evaluation period.

*** If you purchased BBEdit 11 very recently, or are about to do so, there is no cause for alarm - we will announce free-upgrade details and send license codes to eligible customers when the new version is released.

*** You can use BBEdit 11.6.8 and 12.0 side-by-side for the duration of the beta period, if you wish. (This is actually a good idea, since you can cross-check any problems against the old version while writing up a bug report.)

Note that this is a _pre-release_ version. The intent is to fix bugs and address areas of improvement based on what our customers have reported. However, since the software is at this point not fully tested, there _may_ be bugs and regressions.

If this prospect makes you nervous, then sticking with the public release versions is your best course of action. Nobody will be offended if you choose to do so; you're under no obligation to install and use anything but a public release. :-)

Following is a summary of changes since the most recent pre-release build. Complete change notes for all of the pre-release builds in this cycle are available here: <https://s3.amazonaws.com/BBSW-download/12.0_Notes.txt>.

The change notes are organized into additions, changes, and fixes, and are annotated where appropriate with case numbers. So if you recognize a number corresponding to a support case that was opened for you, you can now verify that it's been fixed correctly. Please take the time to review the changes before using the new build -- it'll be worth your time.

One final note: If you run into a bug in a pre-release version, PLEASE DO NOT REPORT THE BUG TO THE LIST. This includes asking about whether others have seen the same problem. Instead, please send a bug report to <[email protected]> and we will deal with it there. This will help us keep the list discussion on topic and productive for all list members.

============================================================================

*** IMPORTANT: this build includes a fix for a bug which would prevent the application state (open windows, etc) from being saved (and sometimes restored) correctly when quitting with windows open full-screen or on multiple spaces.

Since the fix doesn't affect the build you're already running, please do the following *BEFORE* you download and install the new build:

1. Make absolutely certain that you don't have any windows open on spaces
    that are not the active space (as of when you quit);

2. Make absolutely certain that you don't have any windows open in
    full screen mode.
