For many years (20?, 30?) I have been using Default Folder which simplifies all the navegation, I couldn't work without it (I want to cry when I use MS Windows or Linux). One simple alternative is to put aliases to folders you use in some other folder which is easy to navigate to (e.g., "Desktop", "Documents" or "Home").
