Hi Steve, thanks for the quick reply. I realized (after sleeping on it) 
that prior versions of this document were opened in Safari; which as you 
would expect keeps the links intact. I usually only update this particular 
document once per year and it was rather late when I was trying this, so 
it's no surprise that I just forgot :)

I learned about pandoc a while back from Kieran Healy but haven't really 
tried to put it through its paces yet. For more complicated documents, I've 
started to write in LaTeX, which I know pandoc supports as well.
