So, I found the reason, and it is not related to BBEdit (got the same behaviour with Preview and other apps): If a folder is an iCloud folder that has not yet been downloaded to the local machine then applications try to open all documents in that folder when you double click on it or use command-down-arrow. This is probably an OSX 10.13.6 bug.
