Good morning folks,

We're currently working on a feature update to BBEdit 12, which includes a number of new features, as well as fixes for previously reported issues.

Testing is currently underway, and we have a stable pre-release version ready for use.

Note that this is a _pre-release_ version. The intent is to fix bugs and address areas of improvement based on what our customers have reported. However, since the software is at this point not fully tested, there _may_ be bugs and regressions.

If this prospect makes you nervous, then sticking with the public release versions is your best course of action. Nobody will be offended if you choose to do so; you're under no obligation to install and use anything but a public release. :-)

Complete change notes to date for all the pre-release builds in this cycle are available here:

  <https://s3.amazonaws.com/BBSW-download/notes-12.6.txt>

The change notes are organized into additions, changes, and fixes, and are annotated where appropriate with case numbers. So if you recognize a number corresponding to a support case that was opened for you, you can now verify that it's been fixed correctly. Please take the time to review the changes before using the new build -- it'll be worth your time.

============================================================================

version 12.6 (412015) (2019-01-13)

* This version of BBEdit requires macOS 10.12.6 or later. It will
not run on previous versions of macOS or Mac OS X.

Additions
---------

o (none in this build)

Changes
-------

* Changes to expert preferences from the command line (via
"`defaults write`") are allowed to take effect immediately
(except in documented cases where the preference change is
intended to apply at a specific point in time, such as when
    restarting the application).

* [366239] The panel that appears when using "New Disk Browser"
from the File menu now contains a helpful prompt.

* The Save panel used for in response to "New Project Document"
now has a prompt to clarify its purpose.

Fixes
-----

* [NFR] [366049] Fixed a dumb quote in the sandbox access prompt.

* [NFR] Added a line to the sandbox access prompt to click on the
Help button if you don't know what any of this means.

* [NFR] Fixed an internal exception which would occur when closing
an FTP browser window that had been used for FTP (as opposed to
    SFTP).

* [NFR] Removed a couple of entitlements which were not necessary
    for installing the command-line tools.

* [NFR] Removed unnecessary AppleEvent entitlements for terminals
    and web browsers.

* [NFR] Fixed bug in which the application could not create
persistent references to files unless the user had previously
    granted blanket sandbox access.

* [NFR] The sandbox access prompt invoked by the "Allow" button in the Application preferences now includes the same prompt text as
the one used at application startup.

* [NFR] Fixed layout bug in the sandbox access prompt when
choosing a directory other than `/`.

* [NFR] When backups are active and "Keep historical backups" is
turned on, BBEdit will now prompt for sandbox access to your home
Documents folder, if it needs to create the "BBEdit Backups"
    folder.

* [NFR] Removed the sandboxing entitlement for `~/Documents/`,
since it's no longer necessary - we will inconvenience the user
    instead.

* [NFR] Fixed bug in which sandbox access was not correctly
granted at application startup in cases where the first-time
startup prompt was declined, and access had subsequently been
granted through the Application prefs pane.

* [NFR] Removed entitlements for `~/Library/Caches/` and
`~/Library/Logs/`, since we don't really need them.

* [NFR] Reworked "Open with Finder" and "Go Here in Terminal" so
that Apple Event entitlements for the respective applications are
no longer required. This also resolves behavior in which Terminal
would refuse to open a location in response to "Go Here in
    Terminal."

* [NFR] Removed our sandbox entitlements for `.bashrc` and ilk,
    since they're no longer necessary.

* Added `SortWindowsAndDocumentsByName` to the Expert Preferences help.

* [366231] Fixed a case in which BBEdit would not reload a file on
disk in cases where an external process truncated the file
(typically by using `O_TRUNC` when opening the file) but never
wrote to it. (Note that such a sequence of operations will always
    result in an empty file.)

* [362396] Fixed bug in which having previously used "Save Default
Text Window" would interfere with correct restoration of the
sidebar width when reopening existing windows at startup.

* [362396] When applying settings from a previous "Save Default
Text Window" operation, the sidebar width is no longer limited to
a maximum of 250px. If you wanted it wider, you'll get it wider.

* [366260] Fixed a bug in which an incorrect error code was
reported when trying to create a new project document in a
location where it couldn't be written.

* [366260] When using "New Project Document", BBEdit will no
longer allow you to choose a location which isn't writeable,
since trying to create a project there would fail.

* [366062] Lined up the corner radii when printing with "Frame
    printing area" turned on.

One final note: If you run into a bug in a pre-release version, PLEASE DO NOT REPORT THE BUG TO THE LIST. This includes asking about whether others have seen the same problem. Instead, please send a bug report to <[email protected]> and we will deal with it there. This will help us keep the list discussion on topic and productive for all list members.

The package can be downloaded from our web server:

Enjoy,

Someday I'll look back on all this and laugh... until they sedate me.
