OK, I got it back. I THINK holding the shift key down while BBEdit launched stopped it from doing whatever it was doing before because all the windows came up right away including the 20,000,000 line file and the search playground window, but it wasn't processing. Or it was coincidence and BBEdit did something internal after being force-quit several times.
