Just by way of agreeing with Steve about how to replicate data:

Replication has to be done at the file system or application level, or it
has to be done synchronously. synchronous replication is only possible at
short distances, so for many situations, something like rsync is the way to
go. Remember, though, that unlike most big-box replication schemes, ( EMC
SRDF, HDS TrueCopy, etc) NetApp Snap Copy DOES go through the file system,
so it can be used over longer distances and lower-bandwidth connections than
the likes of SRDF.

Regarding replication, take your traditional sendmail/POP/IMAP server
and add rsync. Stir vigorously,

snip, snip

Things like EMC appliance-based replication are expensive and have
distance limits.
