There, did that get your attention? I'm preparing a presentation for my local library. It's going to be called something like "Hands On: Whats inside your computer?".
The format will be a 2 hour session based on a college level anatomy course. I need 6 "corpses" to work with. (Actually, I only want WORKING PCs, though they need not necessarily be complete.) OK, for real now. I'm looking for 6 Pentium 100 or higher PCs. I'll take components, but what I really need to do is create 6 working computers that my students can open, disassemble, reassemble, and then turn on and demonstrate that they still work. (or not) I need: Case, with power supply, hard disk, floppy disk, CDROM, keyboard, mouse, monitor, video card, sound card. I have a dozen or so ISA network cards, so I don't need those, except for machines with no ISA slots. I do have some spare parts myself, so if one component is missing or damaged, that's OK. Also, I'm looking for variety, so an old Mac with OS would be useful too. I have a Sparc and access to an IPaq for example. Basically, the machines just have to be able to run Windows 98. I can also use disposable anti-static mats, or large anti-static bags. I don't need: 486s, broken monitors (it a pain to recycle them), 30 pin SIMMs, the coolest newest hardware (Oh, I'll take it, I just don't NEED it) The course is free, and I'm not getting paid, so I'm begging. If the course goes well, I'll offer it again, so I don't want to take anything on loan. I have about 4 weeks to gather all the hardware. I'll drive anywhere within about 1 hour of Billerica MA to pick things up. If you have an old computer that has been gathering dust, and you're willing to let me have it to do my first training course, let me know.
