Thanks for all the replies! I haven't taken a tally but several folks
recommended Excalibur Data Recovery in Billerica, plus a bunch of
individual recommendations. I'll summarize if anyone's interested.
To follow up on some details: the machine is a Sony Vaio. Norton Utilities
didn't help. The place she took it to was Wizard Computer Services in
Stoughton. The most important data to her was on the D partition, and the
drive came back with something called "ramisys" on the D drive. It sounds
pretty hosed to me, but she's going to send it to Excalibur and see what
they can do.
And no, I have not touched this box myself, this is all long distance on my
part, and I don't know if it was hardware failure or a virus. I suspect
she's running virus software that's out of date, but don't know for sure.
We sort of went our separate computer ways after I tried and failed to talk
her out of buying a computer at Sears, and then tried and failed to talk
her out of upgrading it....
