This coming Wednesday, December 11th, Andrew Hume from AT&T Labs -
Research will present "I know he can get the data, but can he deal
with the data?" Here's the abstract Andrew provided:
Data seems to like me; I collect gigabytes like most
people collect lint. The problem is handling the data;
issues of storage and I/O rates are nettlesome, but
not as vexatious as building a scalable platform to
support whacking at these larger data files. I will
talk about what kind of problems we look at, various
characteristics of the data, and the platform solutions
we have evolved towards.
(Is that a great opening sentence or what?)
Andrew is particularly good speaker, and his current project is
quite interesting. I strongly encourage you to come to the meeting,
both for the speaker and for the topic.
The meeting will be held in MIT E51-145; general discussion starts
at 7:00 p.m., presentation from 7:30 to 9:00; food and drinks at a
local pub often follow.
