I have been reading that 'dump' has been strongly discouraged for use on Linux 
systems because of (at last reading) a problem exists between the kernel and 
the application.  I find this a bizzare definition but haven't been able to 
research the problem much more.

The note that I'd seen that sent me down this path said that Linus said there 
was a problem and that it wasn't high on the list of things to fix.
