Yup, yppasswdd is running on the server for sure. (I did rpcinfo to check for it.)

I believe it is also running on the clients, but I'll doublecheck that.

The only thing I can think of so far, that would cause it to fail -- The shadow and gshadow files are permission 400, but that's the way they've always been, even in /etc. I'll try changing to 600 and see if that does any good, but I don't think it'll change anything.

It would be *most* helpful if only I could figure out why the heck yppasswdd isn't logging to syslog.

If I become root and do

    yppasswd eharvey

Then I get prompted for root's password, and new passwd for eharvey. Everything goes fine, except I get

    Error while changing the NIS password.
    The NIS password has not been changed

If I become myself (eharvey) and do

    yppasswd

I get prompted exactly as expected, but get the same error message.

Any ideas what's going wrong? I've already checked the days-to-change fields in shadow, but they all seem fine. I can't seem to find any logging that would give me a clue about this too.
