I think this may qualify for the longest follow up on a question to BBLISA :-) but... After setting this project aside for a while and just revisiting it last week, I did find a cheap tool ($5) that is available (for immediate online download after paypal payment). I was able to read/extract all the mail from my corrupt dbx file (into ~6000 .eml files, one per msg). They I could drag/drop them into a new Outlook mailbox. The tool is:
