Add "-d ata" to the command line and smartmontools will work with a SATA disk connected via the newer driver. From the template /etc/smartd.conf:

# Linux-specific example: monitor a SATA (Serial ATA) disk which uses
# the libata driver.  This requires a Linux 2.6.15 or later kernel.
# Note that the disk is addressed via a SCSI device, but the
# underlying disk type is actually ATA
# /dev/sda -a -d ata
