If I remember correctly, the most notable difference between the BackUPS
family and the SmartUPS family is that the later was "line interactive"
- meaning the electronics are capable of boosting or cutting the mains
voltage to maintain the correct output voltage without switching over to
the battery. If you have noisy power, this can greatly extend the life
and runtime of your battery by not switching to the battery for every
little power glitch.
