Not directly to your point, but:

I'm playing now with ISC DHCP backed by Openldap. After the initial learning pangs (I had no LDAP background) I'm very happy with the ability to finally script WELL, updates to DHCP host entries without parsing/editing the dhcpd.conf and without kicking the dhcpd.

I am writing in my own rules for updates, and avoiding duplicate MACs, etc is one of them. I'm developing a hardware lab infrastructure that requires testing to make changes to DHCP entries for PXE booting, and this is really essential to allow easy user updates.
