A bit-by-bit average of the bad sector over multiple reads would
probably help pull the data out of the noise, especially in the case
that nothing actually bad has happened (no head crash etc), but where
the sector is just losing retention--the data are still there, but their
magnetic fields are too weak to be read reliably.  Resampling would be
useful on any disk in that situation.
