I get the same error if I don't set the SOFTMAC_DIR environment 
variable. Setting it to the directory containing the softmac sources 
solves the problem.

For some strange reason all module information is lost if SOFTMAC_DIR 
is not set (no MODULE_LICENSE, no MODULE_AUTHORS etc. if queried with 
modinfo).
