Ok, I got a chance to play with this again today. The results were the
same even after updating to the latest snapshot and the latest
wpa_supplicant. I can't get open or WEP to work with wpa_supplicant for
anything.
However I did decide to change my wireless router over to WPA and see if
that would work, and it did. I imagine that you're using WPA, Larry? So
I ask again, is anyone doing open (no encryption) and/or WEP with
wpa_supplicant and bcm43xx?
The symptom is that as far as I can tell wpa_supplicant successfully
associates and everything is going just great, then it says
"Authentication with 00:00:00:00:00:00 timed out" and starts over. As a
matter of fact, I managed to sneak a dhcp client in while it was "timing
out" and got a DHCP address, so I know wpa_supplicant is succeeding but
not recognizing that it has succeeded.
This may be a wpa_supplicant issue or user error, so we don't have to
discuss it at length here, I'd just like to know if anyone's had success
with it so I can rule out bcm43xx.

There's nothing remarkable about it. All one has to do is hit the
right keys at the right time and the instrument plays itself.
