There are (*greps quickly*) about 80 tests for the phy revision, and if
new hardware shows up I'd rather have it not working (with an
appropriate message to report to us) than do funny things.

Also, I don't expect new G PHY revisions to show up, Broadcom will be
following MIMO stuff which is a new N PHY, for their own maintenance
burden I doubt they'll be adding new G PHYs (since they also hardcode
all the allowed revisions and would have to provide new drivers for it).
