Don't trust the led.
My laptop (asus a6km) has a wireless led which always stays off, even
when the card is _working_ under ndiswrapper. I think there is a way
to switch it on, but the point is that the card works anyway.
Another issue with laptops is that some of them have a software radio
switch. If you don't activate it using a kernel module, you can't do
anything with the wireless card. So before trying anything else, make
sure you don't have such a beast on your laptop.
