There is no 11 Mbs limitation with softmac. The driver still cannot do 54 Mbs, but the fastest communication occurs for 24 or 36 Mbs, depending on your model. There is a special version of bcm43xx for mac80211, which is available in John Linville's wireless-dev git tree. You should be aware that I only get a maximum throughput of 1.5 Mbs transmitting and 2.5 Mbs receiving with bcm43xx-mac80211 for my BCM4311 and my 4306 and 4318 cannot even connect. The equivalent numbers for bcm43xx-softmac on the 4311 are 11.5 and 15.5. YMMV.
