Thanks Ehud, I will try this.  Just a note, though, the update was after I
had extracted the firmware with fwcutter (I could only do the update after
the wireless was working); would it still have an effect on it?

7. resume normal life.

If  that doesn't work, I would also go back to the 2.6.22-rc4 tree and
do  make modules_install
