I have a now about 2 years old HP dv5120us lappy, with a bcm4318 radio in it, and with ndiswrapper, it logs in as fast at bootup as it would with a cat5 stuck in the side of it, at a reportedly full 54MB/S connection rate, which isn't noticeably slower than my 1.5/256 dsl connection.
