The Open Source Development Labs (OSDL) have unfolded an initiative
to accelerate the adoption of Linux on mobile devices.

Device manufactures hope that the open source operating system will
allow them to lower development costs while create new devices at a
faster rate. Linux also is expected to offer more flexibility in
developing new devices and deliver more capable mobile phones.

"We believe that the Mobile Linux Initiative will create the ideal
forum where device manufacturers, network operators and developers
can focus specifically on Linux and open source applications to move
mobile handsets to the next level of functionality and
profitability," said Stuart Cohen, chief executive of OSDL.

Individual players in the mobile space already use Linux. Motorola
has shipped about three million Linux handsets, the company claimed.

Palmsource, maker of the Palm OS software, is in the process of
swapping out its proprietary operating system for a version of Linux.

OSDL is a global consortium that seeks to accelerate the adoption and
growth of Linux. The organisation was founded in 2000 by several IT
vendors including Computer Associates, IBM and Intel.
