I don't know about other distros, but I know at least on Debian, unfortunatley, it's a mess if you want to run a 32bit program occasionally, e.g. OpenOffice and flash plugin, which do not have a 64bit versions on Linux yet. I am interested to know others opinions too. I have had a good time running Solaris on amd64. The same installation media is used for both 32 and 64 bit platforms.
