Hi!

Generally the procedure is (from the untarred dir):

1.   $./configure
2.   $make
3.   #make install (in most cases u will be root).

Step one is not needed in some packages. Between step two and step 3 there
are sometimes additional steps (like in case of perl module).

Step one takes arguments (in most cases installation directory and other
packages to include or exclude etc.)

This is in a nutshell. Look for a README or INSTALL or Install.Linux kind
of file in the untarred dir. These should have an explanation which is
package specific.
