Check your system has detected the ext. usb drive or not.

# cat /proc/scsi/usb-storage/0

If you can't see anything you probably need driver for your external HDD

I use Memory stick in my system and here is the output

[EMAIL PROTECTED] usb-storage]# cat 0
   Host scsi0: usb-storage
       Vendor: USB
      Product: Solid state disk
Serial Number: 185418083E98E567
     Protocol: Transparent SCSI
    Transport: Bulk
       Quirks:

If yes then do
mount /dev/sdb1 <mountpoint> -t <fstype>
