As a prerequisite to a software installation in our Linux server
(Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS release 3), I have to set up domain
name. The perquisite is simple, the $domainname command should show
the domain name. In our server when I issue $domainname it shows
(none).

Say our server name is tom.jerry (not tom.jerry.com). $hostname
command shows tom.jerry. As a workaround, from $ prompt I can set
the domain name by typing $domainname jerry and it shows 'jerry' as
domain name (and I can proceed to software installation) but as
usual this disappears each time server restarted.

What is the correct way to specify a domain name in a Linux server
permanently (when server is already configured and running)? Some
internet sites says update your /etc/hosts file to set domain name
but I done know the exact syntax. Some says edit /etc/defualtdomains
which does not exists.

So far I understand, this domain name will only be used by that
specific software. Any solution/suggetion will be highly appreciated.

Regards
