Q-a) installing (upgrading to) Windows XP in place of Windows 2000 while preserving functionality of FC 5 yeah, you can upgrade to windows XP quite easily from windows2000. All you need to do is to select the upgrade options during installation. However, there is a catch!. The Boot Loader will be destroyed by newly installed windows. The FC5 will be kept intact in its own location. what you have to do next, is to insert the FC5 disk1 and boot from the disk in linux rescue mode and then reinstalling the GRUB(if you need the whole procedure as sequence of commands, i can mail you later on). Your system will be just like before.
Q-b) installing (new installation) Windows XP besides Windows 2000 while preserving functionality of FC 5 Well the procedure is same like the question 1. you have to install windows xp in a separate partition. the new boot loader will automatically detect windows 2000. so no problem with windows OS, but like before, you have to manually install the GRUB again. Q-c) Upgrading to FC 6 while preserving the above and replacing FC 5 well, you just overwrite your existing FC5 linux partition during installation.just select these partitions as the installation location during installation. no change in boot loader. new boot loader will automatically detect everything. Q-d) New installation to FC 6 while preserving the above. (having both 5 & 6) just install the FC6 in a new partition during installation. no need to create a new swap partition. the old one will be shared by FC5 and FC6.no change in boot loader. new boot loader will automatically detect everything. ==================================================== a) What is logical volume group? b) What are the benefits? c) What are the problems without it? d) In what cases, I won't need it? Logical volume is method of combining separate Hard drives(logical or physical) to create a new drive(s). for example you have two 40GB hard disk. but you need a 60 GB drive. in that case, just create a volume group and then redistribute it to 60Gb and 20GB. sounds great!!
