I have tried it (benchmarking) myself on Xfce, Gnome and KDE.
Xfce takes the lowest memory, then Gnome and no need to say, KDE takes
maximum.

But, there's an important point. If you use too much KDE applications using
Xfce desktop, that will use memory for both Xfce and KDE. So using Xfce
doesn't mean that you need lowest memory all the time.

For example, I used to use Gnome desktop with AmaroK and Firefox running all
the time. So KDE platform had to be running on background. If I was using
only KDE, AmaroK could run on its native platform, and Firefox can run on
KDE natively. So the memory usage might seem minimal.

So, it all depends on what apps you use frequently, not alone on the desktop
environment.
Well, there's another thing - personal preference ;)
