I would imagine (as I don't know for sure :P) the reason being super low cost to invest in a stream/area which they are starting to explore. If you want to be conspiracy theorist ;) - Maybe they need a place where the "U.S patent laws" are not enforceable. Making things interoperable will require lot of development and technology sharing in both sides - propietary vs FOSS. AFAIK, someone who has seen MS code (as in 3rd part dev partners), by their contract, can not participate in FOSS code. Maybe they need to avoid some of their own legal complicacy. Maybe this is their way to put minimal amount of money and show to others that they have "commited" resources into interoperability so that their products qualify in tenders where that is a "term" let's wait and time will tell .....
