Description: The American Civil Liberties Union Foundation is a national
public interest organization devoted to the defense of the Bill of Rights.
The Development Department of the National Headquarters in New York City is
seeking a full-time Senior Gift Planning Officer. Reporting to the Director
of Gift Planning, this senior-level development professional will be
responsible for actively promoting gift planning among ACLU members and
donors, nationwide, through an on-site, face-to-face cultivation and
solicitation program in cooperation with 50+ affiliates across the country.
Specific Responsibilities:
1. Actively develop and maintain donor and prospect relationships with a
primary emphasis on face-to-face visits, as well as through letters and
phone calls.
2. Provide guidance and support to affiliate staff in their local gift
planning efforts. This includes prospect identification, solicitations and
on-site training of staff and board members to solicit planned gifts and
promote the ACLU Foundation's donor recognition program.
3. Respond to donor inquiries (e.g., bequests, life income gifts and other
gift planning vehicles) with appropriate information within specified areas
of the country.
4. Undertake special projects at the direction of the Director of Gift
Planning.
Education: Bachelor (BA, BS, etc.)
Additional Qualifications: Four years experience in fund raising or a
related field
Familiarity with gift planning vehicles
Ability to travel regularly
Excellent communication skills
Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
Bachelors degree required, but JD, MBA or related advanced degree preferred
Interest in tax, financial and estate planning issues
Commitment to the mission of the ACLU

Program Director
OVERVIEW
The Lawyers Committee for Human Rights (LCHR) was founded in 1978.  LCHR's
mission dedicates the organization "to protecting and promoting the human
rights to which everyone is entitled under international law."
LCHR concentrates its efforts on four broad goals:
1. Developing an international system to prosecute the worst human rights
crimes, building on the committee's longstanding efforts to advance the rule
of law;
2. Combating human rights abuses against workers, as an element of an
evolving social and economic rights agenda;
3. Advancing the human rights of refugees, as part of a more comprehensive
and effective response to humanitarian emergencies; and
4. Protecting the rights of disempowered communities in the face of
systematic police abuse, viewed in the context of broader social justice
issues.
Headquartered in Manhattan, LCHR is a rapidly growing organization,
currently operating with an annual budget of $7 million and a U. S. -based
staff of over sixty.  The Committee is aided by a worldwide network of
hundreds of lawyers and others, who provide pro bono support.  Detailed

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Reporting to the Executive Director and working in concert with the senior
management team, the Program Director will have overall responsibility for
the planning and management for all LCHR programs and will serve as an
advisor to the Board on program and policy.  Armed with a deep understanding
of and commitment to human rights, the program director will have two
primary responsibilities: to provide strong conceptual leadership to LCHR
efforts to protect the human rights of vulnerable individuals and groups
worldwide; and to manage the operations of LCHR programs.
Specific responsibilities include:
Strategy and Program Development
� As a member of the senior management team, participate in the development
of LCHR's long-term organizational strategies and goals.
� Determine program directions and priorities based on analysis of needs and
opportunities, staff input, and LCHR's strategic plan.
� Develop annual program plans, including benchmarks to measure
effectiveness. Insure that program activities are results-oriented and
advance LCHR strategies.
� Develop LCHR's capacity to understand and track external conditions and to
anticipate changing political events.
� Build LCHR's capacity to plan, execute and sustain advocacy campaigns.
� Act as a liaison, exchange information, and initiate cooperative efforts
with other rights advocacy organizations.
� Recruit new allies from outside the human rights community with the aim of
bringing new players into the movement, forming new coalitions, and
broadening LCHR's advocacy base.
� Work with Communications and Development staff to produce and disseminate
organizational and advocacy messages designed to engage key constituencies
in the U. S. and around the world.
� Communicate and defend LCHR's vision, values, and strategic goals to key
internal and external audiences.
Management
� Provide leadership and motivation to program directors and staff.  Serve
as mentor and coach to Program Department, advancing collaboration and
innovation.
� Facilitate an environment in which program staff can work effectively as a
team across individual issue areas, identifying commonalties in their work,
and pooling their efforts and expertise.
� Work with Executive Director, Development Director and Director of Finance
to develop LCHR annual and multi-year budgets.
� Prepare and manage Program Department budget, and insure proper
accountability of all budget-holders in Program Department.
� Recruit, supervise and evaluate program staff.  Identify needs and recruit
a diverse professional staff to complement LCHR's strong base of legal
expertise.
� Design, implement and evaluate program operations to insure that structure
and staffing are aligned with LCHR's new programmatic goals.
� Provide for training and professional development for all program staff.
� Oversee program staffs' preparation of funding proposals and reports.
� Develop and implement a project management system which includes criteria
for evaluating program performance.
� Work with Executive Director, Development Director and key program staff
as required to support all fundraising efforts.
QUALIFICATIONS
LCHR is seeking a Program Director with energy and commitment who is able to
fully articulate and support the mission and values of the organization.
This person must share a passion for both the cause and the organization.
Strong leadership and decision making skills are critical to success in this
position.  The successful candidate should have a proven ability to
encourage team work and collaboration and inspire commitment to common goals
among many individuals and peer organizations.  It is important that the new
Program Director be able to communicate effectively and persuasively in a
variety of forums.
The successful candidate will be experienced in management and budgeting,
advocacy, planning and program design, development and implementation.
Candidates should be able to demonstrate the capacity to manage a complex
organization in a manner that is progressive and consistent.
Candidates should have an in depth understanding of the legal, political,
economic and public policy issues related to human rights as well as a
working knowledge of local, national and international political systems.
Experience operating in both international and U. S. settings is required.
An advanced degree is preferred.
