How about #1 chicken grit? Mine says 100% crushed quartzite rock. The label says it can be used for plant aeration. (Maybe this has already been suggested and I overlooked the post.) I haven't had good luck with sand in my potting mix because it caused the mix to be too dense, but have to admit chicken grit holds a little appeal. I pay $2.95 for 50 pounds. Susan
