Hi! Linda,
I can't help with shiitake. We have a very large native mushroom, we call the
Horse Mushroom. It grows in rings and can be four to eight inches across, with
thick white flesh and the gills start white, go through pink and are black when
fully ripe. The rings are very slow growing and may be several hundred years
old. My property has many such rings in the granite country. By accident, I
included one large ring in my BD area. The mushroom in that ring changed
immediately and have remained the same with continued applications. They grow
thicker, are whiter on top. Come through the clay soil clean. Taste better. Are
great dried. The most interesting thing is that they will last several days
before slugs/ millipedes/ mushroom fly etc become interested. I don't think they
are any more productive, but the quality is much improved.
