Future of Agrarianism
Conference Opens April 25 at Georgetown, Kentucky -- Participate in On-Line
Dialogue Before, During and After the Conference
(Lexington, KY. April 24,
2002) High-tech combined with local culture to create a new discussion about
rural communities, as Kentucky's Georgetown College today initiated an "on-line"
dialogue about their "Future of Agrarianism Conference: Considering Wendell
Berry's Unsettling of America 25 Years Later." The in-person
meeting starts Thursday, April 25 at 6 pm in Georgetown College's Conference
Center, initiating a three-day dialogue with speakers from across the U.S.,
closing with India's ecofeminist Vandana Shiva. For those interested in
logging onto the internet discussion, enter
http://www.georgetowncollege.edu/future_of_agrarianism.htm and follow
instructions on the site to chat with speakers, participants and anyone
interested in this topic from around the world -- at least if you're willing to
use a computer.
This interactive discussion, provided by Kentucky's David
Silverman in parthership with "Communicas," is billed as a "Collaborative
Consulting and Production Network." Communicas provides conceptual
consulting, communications and sustainable development information, products and
services for organizations and communities. "Working at the intersection of
community and communications, we are dedicated to telling the stories and
leveraging the resources needed for the transition to sustainable societies,"
Communicas describes their services.
Those familiar with Wendell Berry's
writing surely may express some skeptcism concerning this brave new world
dialogue mode, given Berry's well-known writings on "Why I Will Not Buy A
Computer," also ironically available online at
http://www.tipiglen.dircon.co.uk/berrynot.html
In his much debated essay
about the growing use of computer technology in everyday culture, Berry
declares, "My final and perhaps mv best reason for not owning a computer is that
I do not wish to fool myself. I disbelieve, and therefore strongly resent, the
assertion that I or anybody else could write better or more easily with a
computer than with a pencil. I do not see why I should not be as scientific
about this as the next fellow: when somebody has used a computer to write work
that is demonstrably better than Dante's, and when this better is demonstrably
attributable to the use of a computer, then I will speak of computcr with a more
respectful tone of voice, though I still will not buy one." The Conference
discussion both in person and on-line promises to be lively and thoughtful,
focusing on the controversial issues of biotechnology, environment and
agriculture.
The Commodity Growers Cooperative (CGC) Board of Directors,
for which Berry serves as Special Advisor, meets from 2 - 5 pm, Thursday, April
25 at Georgetown's Conference Center. Berry and other Board members will
present the John Berry Sr. Leadership Award to India's Dr. Vandana Shiva, who
will be speaking on Saturday evening during the conference. The Board
meetings is open and members of the public are welcome to attend. Contact Karen
Armstrong-Cummings at 859-227-8631 for more information. For more information
