Peter - You might like to look at the current New Scientist magazine (not noted as being anti-GM!), dated 15th June, pp 14-17 'Special Report - Genetic contamination', which covers the original paper in Nature and the controversy over its subsequent trashing. It appears that a dispute over the authors' methods and results (perhaps inspired by campus politics) doesn't affect the basic message. New Scientist concludes that there is no doubt that transgenes have spread to traditional maize varieties cultivated in Mexico; two separate teams have since found transgenic DNA in about 10% of crop plants sampled, although there is no evidence of the contamination of wild maize. Bt maize imported from the US as animal feed has apparently been planted, accidentally or intentionally, in spite of Mexican government precautions. Hope this helps! Tony N-S.
