Viktor Schauberger, in 'The Fertile Earth' makes a few mention of the beneficial effects of the egg shape (amphorae are pretty egg-shaped). He recommends burying a 2 metre tall egg-shape in the earth to hold liquid manure along with fragments of copper and zinc beaten on wood. For this purpose the egg is point up. For pure water storage, the point is down.
I spent a while earlier this year puzzling how to make a large egg-shape to experiment with this. Made do with a small vase eventually, can't really say whether it had an effect. Schauberger's is called a fermentation chamber and it had a motor in it to induce a vortex.
