Poison ivy usually grows where the land has been abused by human activty.  I 
used to get raging cases of it every spring doing landscaping and tree 
moving.  I found that if I annouce my good intentions to the plant and that I 
am an earth healer that I do not get it.  This has worked well for three 
years now.  You may try it for the kids but teach them what it looks like and 
to respect it.  Afterall it is a warrior plant...sstorch
