Sometimes the dictionary is just what we need:  "Gelignite n. An explosive
mixture, comprised of nitroglycerine, guncotton, wood pulp, and potassium
nitrate. [GEL(atin) + Lat. ignis, fire + ITE.]

Would probably work nicely to loosen soil, eh?
